About our Organisation

Rumbek Community Umbrella in Australia Inc. is an umbrella of all Rumbek sub-communities in Australia. It came to existence after a very long consultation between heads of Sub-communities and General assemblies of respective Communities in Australia.

The birth of Rumbek Community Umbrella in Australia is a milestone towards bringing the members Australia wide – “Socially, Culturally and unity of purpose”.

Rumbek comprises four Counties

Rumbek North County

Maper is the Capital of the County and is inhabited by Pakam Dinka clan

Rumbek East County

Thon Adual is the Capital and is inhabited by Alimtouc one and two and also divided into different sub- clans.

Rumbek Centre County

Rumbek town is the Capital and is comprised of two sections, Ruup and Kuei. They are also divided into sub-clans

Wulu County

Wulu town is the Capital and is mainly inhabited by Jur Beli tribesand more recently, the Agar people

About Rumbek

Historically Rumbek town was initiated by “Turko- Egyptian governance of  Sudan in late 19th Century as one of the slave trades centres in greater Bhar- El ghazal. This was due to the strategic location of Rumbek, as it is situated in the middle of South Sudan. The town started to grow until it become one of the most important towns in greater Bhar-El ghazal.

Rumbek is inhabited by two different tribes Dinka Agar with its different clans, and Jur Beli tribe with its own clans.

Rumbek population is estimated between 450,000 to 500,000.

The main economic activities of the people of Rumbek

The Agar people of Rumbek are mainly pastoralists, with divest economic activities such as Agriculture. The Dinka people mainly practice cattle keeping  During the summer season the Agar people of Rumbek move with their Cattles to Cattle Camps, where they practice some economic activities which are suitable to their environment.

Some of these activities involved the youth, where they practice hunting and fishing in the many rivers and lakes in the area.
